The famous Western Ramganga is located 175 miles north east of New Delhi and is about an eight-hour drive. The river snakes its way through a beautiful broad valley into the Corbett Tiger Reserve which is framed by the stunning lower Himalayan ranges; mixed tropical forests and tall elephant grass along the river banks.
The Western Ramganga's proximity to the Corbett Tiger Reserve has helped preserve its rich biodiversity to the fullest extent, offering some of the finest fly fishing for the legendary golden Himalayan mahseer. There are also opportunities to see game and a wide variety of birds during the course of any stay. According to a recent tiger census there are roughly 160 tigers in the reserve.
Fishing
At first glance this river will remind you of a typical trout river. It is boulder-strewn, has deep winding pools and undercut banks with small rapids followed by fast riffles and plenty of long tails of pools.
Unlike most Himalayan rivers where golden mahseer are found, the Western Ramganga lends itself to be fished with a single-handed rod. Golden Himalayan mahseer are in the 10lbs to 50lbs bracket here.
The Western Ramganga river is 50 to 90 feet wide for much of year. It is hard to imagine that a river of this size can produce trophy fish in the 50lbs range. The Western Ramganga also offers terrific opportunities for using nymphs, swinging flies down and across for these monsters, as well as fishing with dry flies.
The Western Ramganga also lends itself to a fair number of sight fishing opportunities for these terrific fish. The excitement of sight-fishing for mahseer has been compared to that of pursuing permit on saltwater flats.
Food and Lodging
The Western Ramganga has fabulous camp facilities. The property has a beautiful location that overlooks the river. There is a spectacular backdrop of forested mountain scenery and the elevated site of the property provides a good place for spotting game.
The camp hosts a maximum of six rods per week and the property consists of six comfortable cabins (each rod has their own) that are spread out over two acres. The cabins are locally-styled huts which have been constructed by local people using materials sourced in the area and hence blend in perfectly with the environment and are suitable for the weather conditions of the region. Each cabin has its own attached bathroom with running water.
The cabins have been designed to offer a stunning view of the pristine river and have their own private veranda and sitting area. They are furnished with British campaign furniture that includes a rosewood bed, dressing table, chairs, cupboard and a luggage rack.
Meals are served in the main dining area. The meals served in camp include Continental, Chinese, Italian, and traditional Indian cuisine and guests can enjoy freshly baked breads and pies against the breathtaking backdrop of the lower Himalayan ranges. Service is outstanding with a ratio of three staff per guest. Access is via a 20-minute walk from the road with your baggage carried by camp staff.
