This is a small river in the north-east and is flanked by two of Iceland’s most famous rivers, the Hofsa and the Sela. Vesturdalsa is fished by three rods.

Fishing

The fishable water is divided into three salmon beats plus there is some additional fishing for sea-run char.

From the top fall, the river flows through a canyon for about 10km where it falls over another fall. From here, it meanders through a valley onto the flats halfway through the second beat where the lodge is. The third beat is made up of endless pools and under-cut banks that create excellent holding water.

The variety of this river is fascinating with long meadows near the sea which then change to Vesturdalsa's upper crags and gorge pools. A salmon river in miniature, this productive Icelandic gem provides visual and exciting sport over many pools and runs.

Some of the best fishing is to be had after a long walk deep into the wilderness where two falls finally bar the salmon’s path. Until recently the river was only fished by the owner’s friends and family keeping the catch statistics quite low.

There is a fish counter on the river showing that around 400 salmon enter the system each season and around 20% of these are multi-sea winter fish. There have been plenty of 15lb fish caught in recent years including a few that exceeded 20lb.

Food and Lodging

The owner of Vesturdalsa has recently built a spacious and comfortable self-catering lodge, situated centrally in the valley, near to some of the best pools. It is also within a 15 minute drive of Vopnafjordur and so convenient for purchasing supplies from the local shops.
