Turneffe Flats has long been recognised as a premier saltwater fly fishing, scuba diving and marine eco-tourism destination. It is located on Belize's Turneffe Atoll, one of the largest and most biologically diverse atolls in the Caribbean. It is best known for its variety of saltwater fishing but has excellent snorkelling and diving on offer.
Turneffe Flats is located on a picturesque point with a white-sand beach and coconut palms. The coral reef is a stone’s throw away and a large bonefish flats is right outside the front door. The lodge is ideally located to enjoy all of Turneffe's 250 square miles of expansive flats, healthy coral reef and remarkably rich marine habitat.
Fishing
For years Turneffe Flats has been known as one of the Caribbean's premier saltwater fly fishing destinations. The diversity of the saltwater flats sets them apart from other destinations and the opportunity to catch bonefish, tarpon and permit on a given day makes Turneffe Flats one of the rare places to pursue a Grand Slam.
Bonefishing is the mainstay of the fishing, with miles of crystal clear, wadeable flats. While wading Turneffe's extensive turtle grass flats, you can sight-fish to large schools of bonefish as well as smaller groups and singles.
For the past decade, increasing numbers of saltwater anglers have developed a serious interest in the elusive permit. Turneffe Flats is one of a select group of saltwater destinations where you can experience the excitement of flats fishing for tailing permit with a reasonable chance of catching one.
Because tarpon are migratory, they are somewhat seasonal. Although some tarpon are around throughout the year, the prime season generally begins in April and continues to mid-October. June, July and August are usually the best months for tarpon fishing. Most of the migratory tarpon are in the 70 to 90lbs, but they see a few 150 to 200lb monsters each year.
Food and Lodging
The lodge has eight spacious and air-conditioned beach cabanas. They are located on the beach and have panoramic views of Turneffe's coral reef. All rooms are furnished with a queen-sized bed and an extra long single bed, ample cupboard space, a chest of drawers and a sitting area. Each room has a large private bathroom with two basins and a shower. The lodge also has two private villas, the reef villa and garden villa, each of which has three bedrooms. Either is an ideal choice for a family.
The main lodge has breathtaking views from the upper and lower decks making it the place where guests tend to congregate. Meals are a combination of Belizean and international dishes which are served family-style at one table. Fresh seafood, local produce and home-baked pastries are standard fare. Depending upon your plans and your preference, you will have the option to take a packed lunch or return to the lodge for lunch.
