Fly Fisher Travel

Steelhead Valhalla

Steelhead Valhalla Lodge is a true wilderness lodge nestled on the banks of the Sustut River, five miles upstream from the Sustut’s confluence with the Skeena River. The Skeena river system is generally regarded as being the producer of biggest steelhead anywhere.

In addition to catching steelhead, you will witness British Columbia’s breathtaking scenery and may see eagles, moose and bears.

Fishing

The steelhead fishing season is during September and October when the weather is best described as variable. Fishing is on the lower 20 miles of the Sustut with a strict catch and release policy.

Sustut steelhead can average 15lbs and many fish run 20lbs or larger.  Interestingly, the hen fish tend to be between 8 to 20lbs while the cocks (known locally as bucks) are in the 14 to 30lbs bracket.

Double-handed rods and everything from skating flies to fast sunk lines are the order of the day.

Food and Lodging

The main lodge was hand-crafted from logs on the current site. There is a generous-sized dining room and living area with fly-tying bench all focused around the log fire.

In addition to the main lodge, there are five cosy guest cabins designed for two people each. There is a separate washing facility which has showers, basins and lavatories. Although rustic, Steelhead Valhalla has every modern convenience.

Why we rate it

It is simply one of the best chances to catch a steelhead of a lifetime.
