Spey Lodge is strategically situated on the banks of the Skeena River, just east of the Skeena and Copper confluence. The lodge is a convenient 15 minutes by car from Terrace airport.
Part of the attraction of visiting Spey Lodge is the outstanding scenery that you will encounter during the course of a week and the fact that owner, Wally Faetz, runs the operation in addition to guiding clients.
Fishing
Depending on the time of year you visit, fishing from Spey Lodge is on a variety of rivers including the Skeena, Copper, Kitimat, Kalum and Kasiks. The fishing is accessed using jet boats and rafts but guests tend to fish by wading from the bank.
The early spring months of March to May are the months to pursue the spring steeelhead run with some king salmon arriving in May. The lower Skeena and Copper in particular has fresh steelhead arriving at this time and April and May are the months to be on the Kitimat which flows through its own watershed rather than being a tributary of the Skeena like the Copper. In addition to these well-known rivers, guests fish a variety of water often including small coastal streams.
The summer months of June to August is the time to pursue the enormous king salmon and other Pacific salmon species. Kings can average close to 20lbs and can reach 40lbs or more. Each season, guests of Spey Lodge catch large king salmon in relatively shallow water using conventional fly fishing tackle and often using no more than Type 3 sinking tips. From mid July, early summer steelhead may also be caught with the Skeena in particular having running fish heading for the Babine, Kispiox, Morice, Bulkley and Sustut.
Spey Lodge is closed for the autumn steelhead months of September and October but Boundary Lodge on the Bell-Irving operates in its place.
Wally and his guides know the rivers intimately and are skilled at planning fishing days to suit conditions so we recommend that guests are equally flexible as to where they will fish on any given day.
Food and Lodging
Spey Lodge itself is on the outskirts of Terrace and is a raised wooden lodge with a generous outside deck area. It caters for between six and eight rods and makes an ideal choice if you want a small private party.
There are four bedrooms with queen-sized beds and two bedrooms with king-sized beds. Each bedroom has its own bathroom. There is large living room, wader room and an open plan kitchen and dining room.
Wally Faetz and his staff create an excellent homely atmosphere and meals are first-class. Guests are treated to much home cooking with even homemade breads, cookies and granola.
