Fly Fisher Travel

Lower Saryu

This is a superb float trip down the Lower Saryu on the borders of India and Nepal. The Saryu is the second largest tributary of the mighty Mahakali River that forms the borders of the two countries. The river journey down this stunning section of the Saryu offers a glimpse into the self-sustained lifestyle of the locals in this valley.

Fishing

This section of river features the most significant migratory runs of golden mahseer in northern India and offers some of the very best fly fishing. Another reason for the Saryu's excellent fishing is that the Mahakali has plenty of natural habitat as it is not dammed for the most part, allowing its tributaries like the Saryu to produce fish year after year.

A float trip on the Saryu combines great fishing with some excellent cultural experiences and stunning views of the Himalayas. The fishing is based on a 15 mile stretch of river, which includes floating, walking and wet-wading your way down to the confluence with the Mahakali.

The Saryu offers beautiful runs that are relatively easy to fish and are suitable for the use of both double, and single-handed, fly rods. Mahseer can be caught on skated dry flies and in the warmer months they can be caught in fast flowing rapids.

The fishing season on the Saryu has two parts. The autumn, or post-monsoon, run begins in the end of September and goes on to the first week of November. The spring season offers a larger window beginning in early March and goes on to the middle of May.

Food and Lodging

In the course of the river journey, guests stay in three separate camps all of which are carefully located for the fishing.

Even in this remote region, guests enjoy the highest standards of service and hospitality. Each fisherman has their own tent that is furnished with the very best of campaign furniture. Beds have cotton mattresses, linen and down pillows. Lavatories are dry-pit and are freshly set-up each day.

Why we rate it
