Las Buitreras

Las Buitreras is set on the Rio Gallegos on the southern tip of mainland Argentina. The river is nearly 300km in length and has its origin in the Southern Andes. There are two pristine and very beautiful tributaries, the Penitente and the Ruebens.

Winding its way through the wild Patagonian landscape the Rio Gallegos emerges into the scenically interesting area that encompasses the unique Las Buitreras beats, some 40km from the river mouth. The flood plain that lies between these outcrops teems with birdlife, alongside large numbers of rheas, silver foxes, horses, hares, flamingos and guanacos.

Fishing

Las Buitreras is home to the most prolific beats on the Rio Gallegos, consisting of over 40km of double-banked, private water with over 50 named pools. The fishing is exciting and varied with pools ranging from deep stony runs to cut banks and streamy shingle flats. Relatively shallow, the river makes for easy wading.

The variety of pools and the visually inspiring mountainous outcrops make this part of the Rio Gallegos quite simply one of the most spectacular stretches of fly fishing water in Patagonia. Fishing for sea trout here requires a level of skill, watercraft and understanding that can be challenging but, armed with the correct knowledge, the fishing on the Rio Gallegos can be immensely rewarding.

Food and Lodging

Las Buitreras is a recently-renovated house providing comfortable living for a group of fishermen in the setting of a traditional, large estancia. A maximum of 10 rods are catered for in five double bedrooms and two single bedrooms.

As you might expect, menus often feature the world-famous Argentine beef, and the wine cellar has a fantastic selection from the Mendoza and San Juan regions. Plus, of course, there is a ready supply of local beer.

Outside, there is a huge veranda, a spacious courtyard that is protected from the wind, and a large, fixed stone grill and terrace for barbeques.

Why we rate it

Las Buitreras has some of the most productive fishing on the Rio Gallegos with scarcely another person for miles.
