Lake Rotoroa Lodge

On the South Island, Lake Rotoroa Lodge is at the northern tip of New Zealand's spectacular Southern Alps. Far from the madding crowd, this isolated and unspoiled location is surrounded by the forests of the Nelson Lakes National Park. Lake Rotoroa is considered the jewel in the crown of the park: its tranquil waters reflect a magnificent vista of snow-capped mountains and lush native bush.

Fishing

Lake Rotoroa Lodge is renowned as lying in the heart of South Island fishing country, which gives them access to more fishing than any other lodge in New Zealand. There are 22 rivers to choose from by car on a normal weather day and more by helicopter.

The abundance of available water is one of Lake Rotoroa’s great strengths as it allows them to rest water and offer a great mix of fishing experiences from the more productive waters, through to the more challenging, in pursuit of the fish of a lifetime. Importantly for New Zealand, a country with significant rainfall, the numerous rivers and diverse locations accessible from the lodge allows greatly improved fishing options in the case of inclement weather.

Food and Lodging

Lake Rotoroa Lodge was built in the early 1920s, and has been lovingly restored and protected to this day. The ten individual guest rooms all have ensuite bathrooms and brass beds and feather quilts. Add to that some eccentricities in the decor, artworks, fixtures and fittings, and the result is a charming and comfortable New Zealand country house.

The ground floor of the two-storey lodge contains an eclectic mix of objets d'art
, paintings, stag trophies from the lodge's early days and, of course, the occasional trout.

The sitting room and dining room both frame a stunning view of the lake and the dramatic mountain peaks of the Travers Range: Misery, Cupola, Hopeless and Angelus.

Why we rate it

The choice and diversity of fishing locations comes into its own in the case of bad weather.
