Fly Fisher Travel

Kau Tapen

Kau Tapen opened in 1985 and is the original fishing lodge on the Rio Grande. It is set in the middle section of the river and has access to some of the best pools on the river.

The name Kau Tapen is synonymous with excellence in the fishing world.

Fishing

Fishing is conducted during daylight hours with potentially the most exciting and productive moment being just as the light is fading. With its fishing over the middle section of the Rio Grande, it is suitable for small double-handed rods or in low water conditions even a single-hander.

Argentine sea trout can be aggressive takers but salmon fishermen should take note that these are essentially trout. In addition to traditional cast and swing techniques employed in salmon fishing, moving the fly with anything from slow figure of eight retrieves to a speedy hand over hand strip will pay dividends.

Food and Lodging

Nine rooms, each with their own bathroom, accommodate the 12 rods that fish from Kau Tapen. The lodge has a convivial living and bar area and boasts amenities such as a massage, sauna and steam room.

The lodge has an excellent chef and menus will delight even the most discriminating palate. In addition, fine Argentine wines are chosen to complement the meals.

Kau Tapen has a justified reputation as being an outstanding lodge for fishing, accommodation and service.

Why we rate it

It has the best combination of fishing, accommodation and services of all the Rio Grande lodges.
