When it comes to fishing in India, the mahseer has captured the imagination of fishermen since colonial days. In the past, visitors may have devoted a day or two to catch a mahseer as part of a larger tour of India, but to date, the fishing experience has not been entirely satisfactory with spinning being the norm and methods that included bouncing dough balls along the river bottom.
It is now, however, possible to pursue mahseer exclusively on fly. We work with an operator who has pioneered fly fishing for golden mahseer in India and who maintains a team of some of the most experienced and skilled professionals in their field. The operation represents a benchmark for fly fishing in India.
There are two distinct operations for golden mahseer fishing. The Western Ramganga and the Lower Saryu. The seasons runs from early March to the middle of May and late September to the first week in November.
