Cuba is up there as one of the world’s great saltwater fishing destinations. Bonefish, permit and tarpon are abundant here and grand slams and even super grand slams (bonefish, tarpon, permit and snook) are a realistic proposition.
Some of the best fishing for those after bonefish and other flats species is on the southern coast of the island. There are three principal areas from which to fish.
Cayo Largo has a hotel suitable for non-fishers, the Jardines de la Reina area has several live-aboard boats from which the fishing is conducted and the Isle of Youth operates from a hotel as well as a live-aboard yacht.
Most recently discovered is the excellent tarpon fishing on Cuba's north coast in the area known as Santa Maria.
The season is November to August with the prime season being February to June.
Of course, no trip to Cuba is complete without a visit to Havana. At least one night in this historic city is a must to take in the sights and sounds.
