Fly Fisher Travel

Alaska

The combination of wilderness and prolific runs of five species of Pacific salmon are what make Alaska a ‘must see’ destination. An Alaskan fishing trip may well include fishing for the incredibly strong rainbow trout but also the beautifully-spotted arctic char and dolly varden.

There exist a variety of operations to suit all tastes and budgets. There are the luxury fly-out lodges where float planes drop you daily to your beat, or the fixed operations where you access the fishing by jet boat. Finally, there are the float trips where you fish new water every day and may cover upwards of 70 miles in a week.

Broadly speaking, the season runs from June to September.

If you have ever wondered about the various names of the Pacific salmon then here they are with both names and in the order they tend to arrive in the river.

King (Chinook), Chum (Dog), Red (Sockeye), Pink (Humpy), Silver (Coho).
