Fly Fisher Travel

Abaco

The Abacos are a string of Bahamian islands approximately 175 miles east of Palm Beach, Florida. Great Abaco is the third largest island in the Bahamas.

Abaco Lodge sits on the rocky shoreline of the Marls on the west side of Great Abaco, just north of Marsh Harbour.

Fishing

The Marls of Abaco are a vast expanse of prime bonefish habitat, on the western shore of Great Abaco. The Marls have long been known by well-travelled bonefishermen as one of the most unique and productive fisheries in the Bahamas.

Abaco Lodge is centrally located and has access to more than 400 square miles of flats for the eight rods. For twenty miles the average depth is four feet, ideal for bonefish. Although it would take a lifetime to fish the entire Marls, Abaco Lodge also offers some incredible fishing on the eastern side of the island that faces the ocean. The bonefish on the Marls average 2lbs to 4lbs but fish on the ocean side are some of the largest in the Bahamas, but they are incredible wary.

Abaco Lodge is the only lodge located directly on the Marls and you step right into the skiff in the morning without the need for driving with a boat and trailer. Bonefish are the main target but there is the occasional permit, juvenile tarpon, jacks, and barracuda.

The lodge has a brand new fleet of Hell’s Bay Waterman skiffs, with leaning bars and seats with back rests, powered with Yamaha 50HP engines. The majority of the fishing is done from the boat but some wading opportunities do exist. The journey to the flats is from 10 to 45 minutes.

Offshore fishing can be arranged seasonally for wahoo, tuna, dorado, billfish, snapper, barracuda and grouper, at an additional cost.

Abaco Lodge is involved in a research and tagging program in conjunction with the Bonefish Tarpon and Trust

Food and Lodging

The lodge consists of eight air-conditioned bedrooms with king-sized beds and ensuite bathrooms. There is a dining room, sitting room, fly tying table, deck area and outside fire pit for relaxing with a drink after fishing.

The lodge also has a swimming pool and a shop stocked with fishing essentials. For the convenience of guests there is a computer with high-speed internet connection plus wireless connection.

Non-fishing activities available include snorkelling, kayaking, diving, and golf.
